Everything to Know About Sunday's Browns Game

October 11, 2018

The Baker Mayfield era has made the Browns far from a pushover every week. The rookie sensation has won two of the three games he’s played in after a 12-9 win in overtime against the Ravens last week and has the Browns even in the playoff conversation. Playoffs?! (Jim Mora voice.) Speaking of playoffs, the Chargers are very much in that conversation after improving to 3-2 with an easy 26-10 win over the Raiders last week. Their two losses came against the only two undefeated teams in football. Philip Rivers continues to shine week after week, looking far from a 36-year-old QB.

As the years go by, Rivers still finds a way to almost get better each season, continuing to add to what should be a Hall of Fame career. Rivers has 13 TD passes through the first gives games, just one behind the league-leading Patrick Mahomes. He’s also completed 70 percent of his passes for 1,495 yards and a 116.4 passer rating along with just two picks. We know about Melvin Gordon and Keenan Allen and just how good they are, but it’s been Austin Ekeler and Mike Williams who have surprised us for this offense, each catching three TD passes and being pivotal parts of this team. On defense, Pro Bowler Melvin Ingram continues to shine, posting 17 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and an interception through five games. It’s been rookie safety Derwin James though who has really been sensational for the Chargers defense with a team-leading three sacks and 35 tackles, which is second behind 38 from linebacker Denzel Perryman. The Chargers issue is that they are in a division with the Chiefs, who just won’t lose. It could end up coming down to this team fighting for a Wild Card spot in the AFC.

Everyone has now learned to put some respect on the Browns name. They aren’t a bunch of losers anymore. In fact, they are right in the thick of things at 2-2-1, and really could be 5-0 at this point. They had an awful kicker that cost them the first two games and then two weeks ago were robbed on a few calls by the refs in a 45-42 loss in OT to the Raiders. This team has been competitive every week and the change from Taylor to Mayfield has clearly made a huge difference for the team that went 0-16 in 2017. Mayfield won his first in Cleveland last week in what was an ugly defensive battle. The Browns have given Carlos Hyde plenty of work in his first season in Cleveland, carrying the rock 100 times for 348 yards and five TDs, which is second in the NFL. The Browns defense has played well, but they get a huge test going up against the Chargers offense. If the Browns pull this out, people are really going to start talking about this team making their December games matter.
